At Leicester Psychology Clinic we provide comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessments for children, young people, and adults. We specialise in ADHD and Autism. Neurodevelopmental assessments can be conducted by a range of professionals, such as psychologists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists. We pride ourselves in having a multidisciplinary team of clinicians that are not only knowledgeable, highly qualified but also caring and supportive.
Our assessment pathway has two stages. Stage 1 is a comprehensive screening assessment, which guides the next steps. Various questionnaires and collateral information, from parents, partners, is acquired to help inform the decision about the next stage, i.e. diagnostic assessment for ADHD and/or Autism, support for mental health needs or alternative assessment.
Stage 2 involves in-depth assessments for the specific neurodevelopmental conditions identified in Stage 1 (ADHD and/or Autism). As a standard part of our assessment process for Child ADHD stage 2 assessments a QB check is undertaken. Stage 2 assessments only begin if our Screening Assessment found enough evidence to recommend them. Our assessments follow NICE guidelines (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), and the DSM V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) guidelines – the same standards used in the NHS. Our assessments are robust, and evidence-based, combining clinical interviews, questionnaires, observations, and information from other sources.
Why have a Stage 1 ADHD Screening Assessment?
For a number of reasons. Firstly, human functioning is complex, and neurodiversity reflects this. Neurodevelopmental conditions often exist on a spectrum, overlap, and present differently according to factors such as age, gender, and other co-existing conditions. Our screening assessments offer a holistic view of you or your child’s functioning and helps guide the next steps – whether that’s further assessment, support or intervention.
This is especially useful if you or your child hasn’t previously been assessed by a relevant healthcare professional. Secondly, if you proceed to stage two diagnostic assessment, the screening information will be included, adding to the breadth of the assessment. You are also highly likely to be seen by at least two clinicians as part of this process, which further strengthens the assessment.
Finally, we understand that private assessments can be a big investment, and that not all families and individuals will be able to access both stages. Some may find the screening alone sufficient, as it provides valuable insights and recommendations, which can empower families and individuals to advocate for themselves or their child (for example at school/with healthcare providers/at work).
ADHD Assessment for Children and Adults
Based on a recommendation from the stage 1 assessment only, this comprehensive assessment (stage 2 ADHD assessment) is conducted by one of our team of qualified psychologists. If you would like any further information about what the specific assessments we include in our full stage 2 process, please ask our admin team or your clinician, and we will be happy to help.
At the end of the assessment you will receive a comprehensive report, drawing together evidence from both stages, and indicating whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD have been met or not. Whilst a diagnosis can’t be guaranteed, the report will provide a detailed overview of strengths and difficulties, and of how you can continue to support your child or be supported yourself. You may choose to share this report with school, work, or other healthcare providers, as it is your report, it is at your discretion who the report is shared with. Finally, your clinician will arrange a brief online or telephone meeting to discuss the report and outcome, and to answer any questions.
Combined ADHD/Autism Assessments
Based on a recommendation from the Stage 1 screening assessment only, this comprehensive assessment will be undertaken by our multidisciplinary team. It includes all elements of the individual Autism and ADHD assessments. At the end of the assessment you will receive a single comprehensive report, drawing together evidence from all aspects of the assessment, and indicating whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD and/or Autism have been met or not. A Cognitive Assessment and a QB check are also undertaken as standard for a combined child assessment.
