What is an Occupational Therapy Assessment?
At Leicester Psychology Clinic, we provide occupational therapy assessments across the age span. Occupational therapy can be helpful supporting people after a head injury, with a neurological condition, or challenges with day to day life practical functioning. Assessments lead to recommendations of an individualised support plan. Occupational Therapy assessments explore the things you currently do, need to do or want to do in your life. Our experienced occupational therapists understand the components of these, the environment and why these might be difficult, whilst also exploring the things you enjoy doing or are good at. An Occupational Therapist can work with you to help find ways to make life easier.
What Does an Occupational Therapy Assessment Involve?
An assessment involves a number of appointments with one of our Occupational Therapists and may be undertaken in our Sensory Room at Leicester Psychology Clinic. We understand that these appointments can feel overwhelming, so we have a range of calming sensory equipment available in the room.
The aim of the appointment is to gather information about you through discussion and completion of evidence-based questionnaires. For children, information is gathered through play-based informal observations and an appointment with parents, which can be undertaken online.
For adults, information will be gathered using evidence-based questionnaires, through discussion with you, observation, and with your consent, a family member. These will assess activities of daily living, work, education, social engagement. An assessment will provide insight into strengths and difficulties including motivation, routine, communication skills, processing and motor skills.
Additional assessments may include an environmental assessment including visits to school, home, work or leisure places.
What Can I Expect Following an Occupational Therapy Assessment?
A comprehensive written report will summarise the assessment findings. The occupational therapist will develop a personalised therapy plan tailored to your individual needs and goals. This plan will outline the strategies, interventions, and practical support that will help you build skills and independence in daily activities. We may recommend specialist equipment and assistive technology to make daily activities more accessible.
A telephone consultation will follow your assessment to explain the findings of the report and to answer any further questions.
Ongoing Therapy
We can also provide ongoing occupational therapy based on the outcome of your assessment. This is tailored to each individual’s needs. It may include support to modify activities, individual goal setting, development of skills within activities. Leicester Psychology Clinic’s aim is to assist you in becoming as independent as possible in work, personal care, domestic activities, and other areas of personal interest.
Sensory Assessments and Therapy
At Leicester Psychology Clinic we offer sensory assessments for children and adults. A sensory assessment involves meeting our experienced therapist in our specialist sensory room. A sensory assessment explores how people take in, notice and respond to sensory information across all the senses, visual, auditory, tactile, taste, smell, the movement senses and interoception, so we can understand whether they experience sensitivities, miss certain sensations, or seek extra input to feel regulated.
What Does a Sensory Assessment Involve?
The aim of the appointment is to gather information about you or your child through discussion and completion of evidence-based questionnaires. For children, information is gathered through play-based observations using specialist sensory equipment. An appointment will also take place with parents, which can take place online.
For adults, information will be gathered using evidence-based questionnaires, through discussion with you, with your consent, a family member and undertaking sensory tasks.
We have different ‘add on’ packages that can include school observations or completion of the Evaluation of Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI). These will be discussed during your first appointment.
What Can I Expect Following a Sensory Assessment?
A comprehensive personalised report will summarise the assessment findings. This report can be used by you, parents or other caregivers, in an education setting, healthcare or work place. The report will provide sensory strategies which you can incorporate into everyday life. A telephone consultation will follow the assessment to explain the findings of the report, to discuss options for further support and to answer any further questions.

How long will an occupational therapy and sensory assessment take?
The length of an occupational or sensory therapy assessment is dependent on the needs of the individual.
Can I have a combined sensory and occupational therapy assessment?
Yes. These assessments can be standalone assessments or combined. Both are undertaken by an occupational therapist. A sensory therapist is an occupational therapist with specialist additional training in sensory assessment and therapy.
Can an occupational therapy and sensory assessment be done online?
Only the initial occupational or sensory therapy screening assessment can be completed online. The rest of the assessment takes place face-to-face.
