Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Assessment

Here at the Leicester Psychology Clinic we offer a multitude of additional specialist neurodevelopmental assessments for children, young people and adults, that include Occupational, Sensory or Educational (Dyslexia/Dyscalculia) assessments, these may go alongside, ADHD/Autism Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessments and reports, or in their own right.

The Assessment Process

At the Leicester Psychology Clinic our assessment of dyslexia and/or dyscalculia is undertaken within the same assessment process. The assessment itself consists of 2 assessment appointments (or one extended appointment with a break). It will include some or all of the following components as required: an exploration of existing problems challenges, the use of screening measures, developmental history, a review of any existing reports/letters about the client, a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) or a Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT). The outcomes of the assessment are then compiled into a comprehensive report and feedback discussion. The assessment can then be used to empower individuals/families to advocate for their children or themselves in a learning/work environment, and therefore may provide eligibility for further support within education or the workplace.

Dyslexia

A Dyslexia assessment at the Leicester Psychology Clinic offers a detailed evaluation of the cognitive and linguistic skills involved in reading, writing, and spelling. It explores key areas such as phonological processing, working memory, and processing speed, which are critical for literacy development. The assessment helps clarify the nature of an individual’s learning difficulties, providing diagnostic clarity where appropriate. This can inform access to support under the Equality Act (2010), including tailored educational interventions and exam arrangements. A formal assessment allows for a more accurate diagnosis and helps inform structured, evidence-based interventions, as understanding the profile of strengths and challenges can reduce frustration, improve self-esteem, and guide effective support from both educators and families.

Dyscalculia

A Dyscalculia assessment at the Leicester Psychology Clinic investigates the underlying cognitive processes related to mathematical learning, including number sense, numerical reasoning, and working memory. It aims to identify whether difficulties with maths stem from a specific learning disorder or other contributing factors. A formal assessment allows for a more accurate diagnosis and helps inform structured, evidence-based interventions. This understanding can significantly reduce maths-related anxiety, guide teaching strategies, and support applications for SEN provision or exam accommodations and additional support under the Equality Act (2010). For many individuals, the clarity provided by the assessment is an important first step in building confidence and improving long-term outcomes in numeracy.
